HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 933

A RESOLUTION to honor the memory of Marvin Calvin Hughett of
Huntsville.
WHEREAS, we were greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Marvin Calvin Hughett,
an exemplary educator and consummate professional who worked assiduously to improve the quality of life for his fellow citizens in numerous capacities; and WHEREAS, born on June 6, 1950, Mr. Hughett was the son of Reverend James Hughett and Loma Crabtree Hughett; he graduated from Huntsville High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Cumberland College, a master's degree from Union College, and an Ed.S. degree from Lincoln Memorial University; and WHEREAS, he began his illustrious career in education in 1972 as a teacher at Scott High School, where he served for forty-four years; during his tenure, he taught various social studies classes, including sociology, psychology, and economics. He also served as the chair of the social studies department from 1993 until the time of his retirement in 2016; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hughett loved his job and was dedicated to leaving his mark at Scott High School; he started the student council in 1993 and was named Teacher of the Year on
three separate occasions by Scott High School, Walmart, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars;
and WHEREAS, in addition to his work as an educator, Mr. Hughett owned and operated an
agricultural business, McHughett Equipment, which he opened in 1978; and WHEREAS, he evinced his religious faith as a member of White Rock Baptist Church and attended Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hughett was also deeply devoted to his family, and he always endeavored to remain true to family values of the highest order; and HJR0933

WHEREAS, he leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Ashley Hughett; his four children who were the lights of his life, Kelly, Jaxon, Kayleigh, and Kaidon; and his siblings, Beverly
(Dale) Buck, Annette Newport, and Lester Dean (Eileen) Hughett; and WHEREAS, he is further survived by his nephews and nieces, Jerry Jones, Tommy Jones, John Buck, Danny Newport, Tim Hughett, Rebecca Roya, Deborah Farris, Sarah Hughett, Lainill Crabtree, and Kathryn Ossoff; special friends, Gary Sexton and Chester Duncan; and a host of other special family, friends, and work acquaintances; and WHEREAS, in addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rebecca Jones; brother, Chester Hughett; six half-brothers and half-sisters; grandparents; and special friend, Ray Duncan; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hughett leaves behind an indelible legacy of integrity and probity in
public life, compassion and loyalty in private life, and diligence and dedication in all his chosen endeavors; he will be remembered both for his passion for his work and the success of his more than 5,000 students; and WHEREAS, it is fitting that we should remember the bountiful life of this exceptional public servant and human being; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED
TWELFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE
CONCURRING, that we honor the memory of Marvin Calvin Hughett, reflecting fondly upon his impeccable character and his stalwart commitment to living the examined life with courage and conviction.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we express our sympathy and offer our condolences to the family of Mr. Hughett.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
