HOUSE BILL 160
By Williams AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 49,
Chapter 6, relative to social health curriculum.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 49, Chapter 6, Part 10, is amended by
adding the following language as a new section:
(a) The state board of education shall develop standards for an introduction to
social health course that will teach students the components of healthy lifestyles and relationships, communication skills, relationship development, technology uses, and career exploration.
(b) The department of education shall develop guidelines and the framework for the introduction to social health course curriculum based on the standards developed by
the state board pursuant to subsection (a).
(c) LEAs shall develop a nine-week introduction to social health course of
instruction based on the guidelines and framework developed by the department, and shall require students in grades six through eight (6-8) to enroll in the course.
(d) The course of instruction on social health required pursuant to subsection (c)
must be taught by a teacher with an endorsement in family and consumer science education.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it, and shall apply to the 2021-2022 school year, and each school year thereafter.
