This bill introduces a new section to South Dakota's election laws that prohibits candidate campaign committees and political action committees affiliated with state officials from accepting contributions from certain individuals employed or appointed by those officials. Specifically, the restrictions apply to individuals who are the heads of departments or agencies, the highest-paid employees in those departments (excluding the head), or those who report directly to the state official. The term "state official" is defined to include the Governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, auditor, treasurer, attorney general, commissioner of school and public lands, and members of the Legislature.
Additionally, the bill establishes that this new regulation will take effect on January 1, 2027. This measure aims to enhance the integrity of political contributions and reduce potential conflicts of interest by limiting the sources of funding for political committees associated with state officials.
