This bill amends existing laws regarding the licensure of certified social workers in private, independent practice in South Dakota. It introduces a new category of licensure specifically for certified social workers in private, independent practice and outlines the requirements for obtaining this license. Key amendments include the removal of the requirement to pass a licensure examination, allowing applicants to instead demonstrate professional experience. Specifically, applicants who have failed the examination since January 1, 2021, can submit evidence of completing at least 3,000 hours of supervised professional experience as an alternative to passing the exam.

Additionally, the bill mandates that the board shall establish rules for the licensure process, including eligibility, continuing education, and supervision standards for all categories of social workers. It also clarifies that individuals who obtain licensure without passing the examination will not be eligible to participate in the Social Work Licensure Compact. The new provisions are set to take effect on January 1, 2027.
