This bill establishes a new training program for county coroners under the authority of the Department of Health, which will include training on death scene investigation and death registration. The Department is tasked with promulgating rules to set minimum education and training standards for newly selected county coroners, as well as advanced training standards for those already in office. This new section is added to chapter 34-1 of the South Dakota law.

Additionally, the bill amends existing law to transfer the responsibility for the training program from the Law Enforcement Officers Standards Commission to the Department of Health. Newly selected county coroners are now required to participate in this training program within one year of taking office and must complete advanced or refresher training every two years. The bill also repeals a previous section that mandated the Law Enforcement Officers Standards Commission to establish a training program for county coroners, thereby consolidating the training authority under the Department of Health.
