This bill amends South Dakota's current law regarding the driving portion of a driver license exam. It allows applicants who are native speakers of a language other than English to bring an interpreter to assist them during the driving test. The interpreter must be approved by the Department of Public Safety, and the responsibility for recruiting and paying the interpreter lies solely with the applicant.
Additionally, the bill maintains that all instructions given during the driving test must be administered in English. The existing provisions for noncommercial driver licenses and permits, which include providing applications and examination materials in both Spanish and English, remain unchanged.
