This bill aims to prohibit the manufacture, sale, or distribution of cell-cultured meat in South Dakota, establishing penalties for violations. It introduces a new section to chapter 34-18, stating that individuals may not sell or distribute cell-cultured meat, with violations classified as a Class 2 misdemeanor. The Department of Health is authorized to inspect food service establishments for compliance, and upon conviction, the department may suspend or revoke licenses related to food service. The bill defines "cell-cultured meat" as animal tissue produced from cell cultures in a laboratory, rather than through traditional animal farming.
Additionally, the bill amends section 39-5-38 to include cell-cultured meat in the list of items that can be seized and condemned if found in violation of state law. It also establishes a new section in chapter 39-5 that prohibits the manufacturing of cell-cultured meat for sale, with similar penalties and enforcement measures as outlined in the previous section. The provisions of this Act are set to expire on June 30, 2035, at which point the law will revert to its previous state.
