A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION, Recognizing the annual South Dakota Senior Games.

WHEREAS, the South Dakota Senior Games were established in 1984 and financially supported by the Legislature for the first two years. Since then, the organization has become a non-profit organization, directed by a board of directors and an executive director, and funded through business partners, donations, and registration fees; and

WHEREAS, the mission statement of the organization reads, “We encourage better health and fitness for South Dakotans over the age of 50 with events that promote physical and social wellness in the spirit of friendly competition”; and

WHEREAS, the South Dakota Senior Games provides opportunities for people age 50 and older of all skill levels to compete in nineteen athletic and non-athletic events and activities. Athletes can qualify for the National Senior Games on a biennial basis; and

WHEREAS, the South Dakota Senior Games supports the Regional Senior Games in the communities of Sioux Falls, Madison, Box Elder/Rapid City/Custer, Aberdeen, Huron, and Watertown. This year, the organization is celebrating the fortieth annual State Senior Games in August, and with a softball tournament in September in Pierre:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED, by the Ninety-Ninth Legislature of the State of South Dakota, that the Legislature recognizes the South Dakota Senior Games as an impactful organization in this state and encourages attending the fortieth annual State Senior Games.
