An Act to incorporate the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings in the social studies curriculum.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of South Dakota:
Section 1. That   13-1-51 be AMENDED:
13-1-51.
The Board of
Education Standards may
shall
promulgate
rules,
pursuant to chapter 1-26,
to provide for a
social studies curriculum
and coursework in
South Dakota American Indian history and culture
that
incorporates
the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings and provides an
opportunity for all elementary and secondary students to focus on the
heritage and history of the nine federally recognized tribes in this
state.
In meeting the requirements of this section, the board shall consult with the South Dakota Indian Education Advisory Council.
