An Act

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION, To create the One Hundredth Session Planning Committee of the South Dakota Legislature.

WHEREAS, the South Dakota Legislature met for the first time in 1889 and held its first regular session in 1890; and

WHEREAS, the South Dakota Legislature met biennially until 1963, and thereafter annually; and

WHEREAS, since the South Dakota Legislature's first call to order, more than four thousand men and women, from all walks of life and all corners of this state, have entered into legislative service by taking a solemn oath to support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of this state and to faithfully discharge their duties, according to the best of their abilities; and

WHEREAS, the South Dakota Legislature has sagely guided this state, from its admission to the Union, through wartime and peacetime, through economic despair and bounty, through famine and feasts, through drought and floods, and through the challenges and unparalleled promises of the twenty-first Century; and

WHEREAS, to honor and celebrate the work of this esteemed institution on the occasion of its one hundredth session, it is deemed appropriate to create the One Hundredth Session Planning Committee of the South Dakota Legislature, and to provide that the committee must consist of three current members and one former member of the House of Representatives, appointed by the speaker of the House; three current members and one former member of the Senate, appointed by the president pro tempore of the Senate; and the state historian:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the House of Representatives of the Ninety-Ninth Legislature of the State of South Dakota, the Senate concurring therein, that the One Hundredth Session Planning Committee of the South Dakota Legislature do all things necessary and proper to conceive of and create year-long activities and events that will allow residents of all ages to commemorate the proud and storied history of the South Dakota Legislature; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the One Hundredth Session Planning Committee of the South Dakota Legislature encourage the pursuit of scholarship regarding the South Dakota Legislature, at all academic levels; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the One Hundredth Session Planning Committee of the South Dakota Legislature ensure the biographical data regarding each individual who has served in the South Dakota Legislature completely and accurately reflects the individual's life and accomplishments as a citizen legislator; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the One Hundredth Session Planning Committee of the South Dakota Legislature engage with public and private sector partners, at the local, state, regional, and national level, to host a celebration that showcases this great institution and this great state; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the One Hundredth Session Planning Committee of the South Dakota Legislature, under the direction of a chair, selected by and from among its members, and with administrative staff support provided by the Legislative Research Council, meet as necessary to achieve the goals and objectives set forth in this resolution, and provide progress reports to the Executive Board of the Legislative Research Council, at the time and in the manner directed by the board.
