Senate Bill 187

An Act to require schools to provide instruction on South Dakota's tribal history, culture, and government.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of South Dakota:

Section 1. That chapter 13-33 be amended with a NEW SECTION:

Every school in the state that is accredited by the Department of Education shall provide instruction on South Dakota's tribal history, culture, and government. To meet the requirement of this section, a school shall use the course content developed by the Department of Education pursuant to   1-54-12. The school may modify the course content to incorporate elements that have a regionally specific focus or to incorporate the content into existing curriculum. To the extent possible, a school shall collaborate with any federally recognized Indian tribe located within the school district or with neighboring Indian tribes to incorporate expanded and improved curricular materials about Indian tribes, and to create programs of classroom and community cultural exchanges.
