A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION, Affirming the importance of the constitutionally required legislative oath of office.
WHEREAS, S.D. Const., Art III,   8, provides that before a legislator begins the legislator's official duties, the legislator is required to take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation; and
WHEREAS, the constitutional oath or affirmation requires a legislator to swear or affirm that the legislator will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the state of South Dakota, and will faithfully discharge the duties of the legislative office according to the best of the legislator's abilities; and
WHEREAS, the constitutional oath or affirmation requires a legislator to swear or affirm that the legislator has not knowingly or intentionally paid or contributed anything, or made any promise in the nature of a bribe, to directly or indirectly influence any vote at the election at which the legislator was chosen to fill the legislative office; and
WHEREAS, the constitutional oath or affirmation requires a legislator to swear or affirm the legislator has not accepted, nor will the legislator accept or receive directly or indirectly, any money, pass, or any other valuable thing, from any corporation, company or person, for any vote or influence the legislator may give or withhold on any bill or resolution, or appropriation, or for any other official act:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the House of Representatives of the Ninety-Eighth Legislature of the State of South Dakota, the Senate concurring therein, that the South Dakota Legislature affirms the importance of the constitutional legislative oath of office and encourages its members to commit to the duties, responsibilities, and obligations contained therein.
