The bill H. 4462 proposes amendments to the South Carolina Code of Laws by introducing two new sections. Section 2-1-260 establishes a term limit for members of the South Carolina House of Representatives and Senate, stating that no member may serve more than twelve years in the General Assembly, whether in one chamber or a combination of both. Importantly, any service prior to the effective date of this act will not count towards the twelve-year limit, which will only apply after the act is ratified. This section will take effect upon the ratification of a constitutional amendment that allows for such term limitations.
Additionally, Section 2-1-270 increases the in-district compensation for members of the General Assembly. Starting January 1, 2027, members of the House will receive $2,500 per month, while members of the Senate will receive the same amount starting January 1, 2029. The bill is currently residing in the House Committee on Judiciary and will take effect upon approval by the Governor.
