The South Carolina Senate has introduced a resolution to officially declare May 5, 2025, as "Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Red Dress Day" in the state. This day aims to honor the lives of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit individuals who have been lost to violence, as well as to raise awareness about the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S). The resolution highlights the alarming rates of violence and abduction faced by Indigenous women and the systemic barriers that often prevent these cases from being adequately addressed.

The resolution also calls for citizens of South Carolina, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to participate in remembrance events by wearing red and displaying red dresses as a symbol of solidarity and support for affected families. It marks a significant step towards acknowledging the MMIW crisis and emphasizes the Senate's commitment to collaborating with Tribal Nations and various stakeholders to address issues related to human trafficking and systemic injustices affecting Indigenous communities. A copy of the resolution will be sent to relevant tribal entities, the Governor, and the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs.
