The South Carolina Senate has adopted a resolution to congratulate the Forest Creek Middle School mock trial team, along with their coaches and school officials, for winning the South Carolina Bar's 2024 State Middle School Mock Trial Championship. The team competed against eleven other middle schools, with JET Middle School of Johnston being the first runner-up. The mock trial competition involved presenting both prosecution and defense arguments in a fictitious criminal case, focusing on presentation skills rather than the legal merits of the case.
The resolution highlights the educational benefits of participating in mock trials, such as developing critical thinking, collaboration, and an understanding of the legal system. It acknowledges the contributions of the team's teachers, Michelle Engstrom and Amanda VanValkenburgh, as well as attorney coach Gary Lemel, and expresses appreciation for the pride and recognition the team has brought to their school and community. A copy of the resolution will be presented to the team and its supporters.
