The South Carolina Senate has adopted a resolution to congratulate the Forest Creek Middle School mock trial team, along with their coaches and school officials, for winning the South Carolina Bar's 2024 State Middle School Mock Trial Championship. The team competed against eleven other middle schools, with JET Middle School of Johnston being the first runner-up. The mock trial competition involved presenting both prosecution and defense sides of a fictitious criminal case, and participants were evaluated based on their presentation skills rather than the legal merits of the case.
The resolution highlights the educational benefits of mock trial programs, which foster critical thinking, collaboration, and an understanding of the legal system among students. The Forest Creek team, under the guidance of teachers Michelle Engstrom and Amanda VanValkenburgh, and attorney coach Gary Lemel, has made significant achievements, bringing pride to their school and community. The resolution concludes with a commitment to present a copy of the resolution to the team and its leaders.
