The South Carolina Senate has introduced a resolution to commend three Dreher High School students—Micah Roth, Eliza Jones, and Hampton Rogers—for their courageous actions during a kitchen fire on February 10, 2025. While on a routine run in Columbia's Shandon neighborhood, the students heard a woman, Donna McIntosh Aiken, screaming for help from her burning home. Without hesitation, they entered the house, where Roth extinguished the flames from a gas stove, while Jones assisted Aiken in escaping and Rogers ensured no one else entered the dangerous situation and called for emergency services.
The resolution highlights the selfless bravery of these young athletes, who acted quickly to save Aiken and her pet, despite the challenges posed by thick smoke. The firefighters who arrived on the scene were able to rescue Aiken's Yorkshire terrier, Dash, and extinguish the fire. The resolution expresses the Senate's gratitude and admiration for Roth, Jones, and Rogers, recognizing their actions as heroic, even though the students humbly downplayed their heroism, viewing themselves simply as individuals who were in the right place at the right time. A copy of the resolution will be presented to each of the students.
