The "South Carolina Pray Safe Act" aims to establish the South Carolina Pray Safe Grant Program within the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). This program is designed to provide grants for security enhancements to private organizations that are at risk of being victims of religiously motivated crimes. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations and can receive grants up to $750,000 for various security improvements, including assessments, personnel, and physical upgrades to their facilities. SLED will develop the application process and criteria for ranking applications based on the risk level of the organization and facility, previous incidents, and existing security measures.
Additionally, the act establishes the South Carolina Pray Safe Grant Program Fund, which is separate from the general fund and designated solely for funding these grants. SLED is tasked with creating rules for the grant application process, terms of agreements, and verification of fund usage. The act will take effect upon the Governor's approval.
