The "South Carolina STEM Opportunity Act" aims to enhance the state's focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education by establishing the South Carolina STEM Coalition, the South Carolina STEM Education Fund, and the SC STEM Coalition Advisory Council. The coalition will be formed from the existing South Carolina Coalition for Mathematics & Science and S2TEM Centers SC, with the goal of fostering public/private partnerships to prepare students for STEM careers. The STEM Education Fund will be created within the State Treasury to support STEM programs and initiatives, funded through appropriations, donations, and other contributions.
The advisory council, consisting of eleven members from various educational and industry backgrounds, will oversee the fund's expenditures and ensure equitable resource distribution across the state. The coalition will be administered by a director hired through Clemson University and will focus on promoting STEM education, developing a skilled workforce, and collaborating with educational institutions and businesses. The act outlines specific responsibilities for the coalition, including advocating for STEM education awareness, supporting pilot programs, and reporting on the coalition's impact annually. The act will take effect upon the Governor's approval.
