The "South Carolina STEM Opportunity Act" aims to enhance the state's focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education by establishing the South Carolina STEM Coalition, the South Carolina STEM Education Fund, and the SC STEM Coalition Advisory Council. The coalition will be formed from the existing South Carolina Coalition for Mathematics & Science and S2TEM Centers SC, with the goal of fostering public/private partnerships to prepare students for STEM careers. The STEM Education Fund will be created within the State Treasury to support STEM programs, funded through appropriations, donations, and other contributions, with the stipulation that all expenditures must align with the coalition's objectives.
The advisory council, consisting of eleven members from various educational and industry sectors, will oversee the fund's expenditures, measure the coalition's impact, and promote equitable resource distribution. The coalition will be directed by an approved director from Clemson University and will coordinate STEM education initiatives across K-12 and higher education, advocate for STEM career opportunities, and engage with businesses to enhance workforce readiness. The act will take effect upon the Governor's approval, signifying a commitment to advancing STEM education in South Carolina.
