The "Weapons Detector Systems in Schools Act" aims to enhance security in South Carolina public schools by mandating the installation of weapons detector systems at all public school building entrances and athletic venues. The bill requires that all individuals entering these facilities be screened by trained personnel, and it stipulates that training must be provided to staff and volunteers on the appropriate use of these systems and the protocol for responding to weapon detections. Additionally, until the complete systems are installed, schools are permitted to use handheld metal detectors.
The legislation also empowers the State Department of Education to establish regulations regarding the selection, implementation, and maintenance of these weapons detector systems, as well as the training protocols for school employees and volunteers. The definition of "weapons detector" is broadened to include metal detectors and any other technological means for screening for weapons deemed appropriate by the State Board of Education or local school district boards. The act will take effect upon the Governor's approval.
