The bill, known as Maddie's Law, seeks to amend the South Carolina Code of Laws by adding Section 46-3-290, which prohibits the use of the "Certified SC Grown" designation on any food or food products that contain messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA). Under this new provision, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture will require applicants for the "Certified SC Grown" designation to certify that their products do not contain mRNA.

Additionally, the bill establishes penalties for violations of this provision. If a person is found guilty of placing the "Certified SC Grown" designation on food or food products that contain mRNA, they will be charged with a misdemeanor and may face a fine of up to five hundred dollars or imprisonment for a maximum of thirty days. Each violation is treated as a separate offense. The act will take effect upon approval by the Governor.
