A house RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE Wallis Bond, a math interventionist at brockman elementary school, FOR being selected as a 2024 presidential awards for excellence in mathematics and science teaching state finalist.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that Wallis Bond of Richland County has been selected as a 2024 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) state finalist in the mathematics category; and

Whereas, established by Congress in 1983, this award is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics teaching and recognizes those teachers who have both deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas. Wallis Bond is one of six PAEMST finalists in South Carolina, and one of only three in the mathematics category; and

Whereas, up to two national awardees from each state or jurisdiction will be selected by the President, who is authorized to present the award annually to one hundred ten exemplary teachers working in our nation's schools, including K-12 schools in the fifty states, the Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and the U.S. jurisdictions of the District of Columbia, the commonwealth of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands; and

Whereas, teaching in Richland County School District One for fifteen years, Wallis Bond currently works as a math interventionist at Brockman Elementary School. As a math interventionist, she not only teaches in the classroom, but also assists fellow teachers in making student connections between math and the real world.  It is witnessing students' "aha" moments that brings her the most joy; and

Whereas, while the 2024 PAEMST national winners will not be announced until 2025, selection as one of six finalists for South Carolina, a state with thousands of K-12 schools, is an honor worthy of recognition; and

Whereas, the Palmetto State is fortunate to have such a devoted and experienced teacher as Wallis Bond.  She truly represents the expertise and dedication of teachers in our State and demonstrates the positive impact of excellent teachers on student achievement.  Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Wallis Bond, a math interventionist at Brockman Elementary School, for being selected as a 2024 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching state finalist.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Wallis Bond.
