The bill amends Sections 16-16-12, 36-10-9, and 45-21-16 of the General Laws to establish a new "Procedure for service retirement" for teachers and other members in active service. Commencing on July 1, 2026, the bill allows teachers and state and municipal employees to retire upon the earlier of: (A) attaining at least age sixty (60) and completing at least thirty (30) years of total service; or (B) reaching their retirement eligibility date under existing state statutes. The bill clarifies that these provisions apply notwithstanding any other provisions in the specified subsections. The act aims to modernize retirement options for educators and municipal employees while maintaining the integrity of the retirement system. It takes effect upon passage.
