The bill amends Section 11-41-20 of the General Laws regarding shoplifting, introducing new penalties for the crime. It establishes that any person convicted of shoplifting items valued at less than $1,500 will be guilty of a misdemeanor and may face a fine. For items valued between $1,500 and $5,000, the punishment can include imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of up to $1,500, or both. If the value of the stolen items is between $5,000 and $10,000, the offender may face imprisonment for up to six years or a fine of up to $3,000, or both. For items valued over $10,000, the maximum penalty is imprisonment for up to ten years or a fine of up to $5,000, or both. Additionally, any subsequent offense for items valued at less than $1,500 will be classified as a felony. This act will take effect upon passage.
