The Senate Resolution, SR 3142, celebrates the 50th anniversary of Sojourner House of Rhode Island, an organization founded in 1976 by Brown University students and community members to address domestic violence, which was then a largely unspoken issue. Over the past five decades, Sojourner House has provided vital services to over 60,000 Rhode Islanders affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. The organization has established itself as a leader in the state’s response to these issues, offering a range of support services including emergency shelter, transitional housing, and emotional support, while also focusing on housing solutions to help survivors find safety.
The resolution acknowledges the significant impact of Sojourner House in promoting the safety and well-being of survivors and their families through trauma-informed care and community collaboration. It highlights the organization's commitment to addressing the housing crisis faced by individuals fleeing violence, having developed a continuum of housing options across the state. The Senate expresses its gratitude for the ongoing work of Sojourner House and honors its legacy by recognizing this milestone during the legislative session. Additionally, the resolution directs the Secretary of State to transmit a certified copy of the resolution to the organization's CEO, Vanessa Volz.
