The Rhode Island House of Representatives has introduced a resolution to proclaim March 2026 as "Brain Injury Awareness Month" in the state. This initiative addresses the significant impact of brain injuries, with over 12,000 residents expected to sustain a traumatic brain injury that year. The resolution highlights the alarming statistics regarding brain injuries as a leading cause of death and disability among children and young adults, as well as the financial burdens faced by individuals and families due to inadequate insurance coverage for necessary rehabilitation and long-term care.

The resolution emphasizes the importance of specialized rehabilitation programs and community services to support individuals with brain injuries, aiming to prevent unnecessary institutionalization and promote their ability to live to their fullest potential. It calls on all Rhode Islanders to engage in activities throughout the month to raise awareness about brain health and the challenges faced by those affected by brain injuries. A certified copy of the resolution will be sent to the Executive Director of the Brain Injury Association of Rhode Island to further support this cause.

Introduced by Representatives Furtado, Shekarchi, Blazejewski, and Kazarian, the resolution was introduced on March 17 and has been referred to the House, where it has been read and passed.
