The Rhode Island House of Representatives has introduced a resolution to officially designate March 18, 2026, as "Transit Employee Appreciation Day" in the state. This resolution acknowledges the vital role that public transportation workers play in the lives of millions of Americans, highlighting that in 2024, approximately 7.7 billion public transportation rides were taken across the country. It emphasizes the dedication of over 400,000 public transportation employees who ensure safe and timely travel for various passengers, including those with disabilities, older adults, and students. The resolution also notes the economic benefits of public transportation, stating that every $1 billion invested generates $5 billion in economic impact and creates thousands of jobs.
The resolution specifically recognizes the contributions of the Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority (RIPTA), which has been providing essential services since its establishment in 1966. RIPTA operates numerous bus routes and paratransit services, employing around 900 individuals who work diligently to maintain and operate a fleet of buses. By proclaiming Transit Employee Appreciation Day, the resolution aims to honor the hard work and commitment of these transit employees. It directs the Secretary of State to send a certified copy of the resolution to the CEO of RIPTA, Christopher Durand.
Introduced by Representatives Morales, Shekarchi, Blazejewski, Chippendale, and Cruz, the resolution was introduced on March 17 and has been read and passed in the House.
