The Rhode Island House of Representatives has introduced a resolution to officially recognize March 2026 as "National Social Work Month" in the state. This resolution highlights the vital role that social workers play in empowering individuals, families, and communities, as well as their commitment to improving human well-being and addressing social injustices. It acknowledges the diverse settings in which social workers operate, including schools, hospitals, and government agencies, and emphasizes their significant contributions to mental health, substance use treatment, and advocacy for marginalized populations.
The resolution also notes the growing demand for social workers, with projections indicating an increase in the profession over the next decade. It calls upon citizens to celebrate and support the social work profession alongside the National Association of Social Workers Rhode Island Chapter. The resolution concludes by directing the Secretary of State to transmit a certified copy to the Executive Director of NASW-RI, Rebekah Gewirtz, in recognition of the contributions made by social workers in Rhode Island.
Introduced by Representatives Shallcross Smith, Shekarchi, Blazejewski, and Chippendale on March 12, the resolution has been read and passed in the House.
