The Rhode Island Senate has introduced a resolution, SR 3054, to congratulate the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) Chapter 106 "Sophocles" of Providence on its 100th anniversary, which will be celebrated on May 30, 2026. Founded in 1926, AHEPA Chapter 106 has played a significant role in promoting Hellenic culture and heritage while fostering civic engagement and responsibility among Greek Americans in Rhode Island. The chapter has a notable history of community service, educational support, and cultural pride, including hosting the 16th Supreme Convention of AHEPA in 1939 and maintaining a scholarship program for local students.
Over its century-long existence, AHEPA Chapter 106 has shown a commitment to philanthropy, public health initiatives, and advocacy for Hellenic issues, including strong U.S.-Greece relations and support for justice in Cyprus. The chapter has also been actively involved in local community events, particularly in partnership with the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation. The resolution recognizes the chapter's lasting impact on the Rhode Island community and its dedication to preserving and promoting Hellenic heritage for future generations. The Senate has authorized the Secretary of State to transmit a certified copy of the resolution to the chapter's president, Mr. George Coclin.
