The bill amends various chapters of the General Laws in Rhode Island to mandate insurance coverage for lung cancer screenings, recognizing lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths in the state. It establishes a new section in multiple chapters, including "Accident and Sickness Insurance Policies," "Nonprofit Hospital Service Corporations," "Nonprofit Medical Service Corporations," and "Health Maintenance Organizations," all titled "Insurance coverage for lung cancer screening."

The legislation requires that, starting January 1, 2027, all individual or group health insurance contracts must provide coverage for follow-up screening or diagnostic services for lung cancer upon the recommendation of a health care provider, in accordance with current American Cancer Society guidelines. There shall be no copayment, coinsurance, or any other cost-sharing required, and no deductible shall need to be met for these services, except for health plans paired with federally qualified health savings accounts.

The bill also allows for medical management or utilization review of the services, including preauthorization, to ensure compliance with the American Cancer Society guidelines for lung cancer screening. It emphasizes the importance of early detection in providing timely care to patients and encourages health plans to implement these benefits prior to the mandated date. The act will take effect upon passage.
