The bill amends Chapter 11-47 of the General Laws, titled "Weapons," by adding a new section, 11-47-60.5, which mandates suicide awareness measures at shooting ranges. Under this new provision, every shooting range is required to conspicuously display a specific sign in areas where shooting activities occur. The sign must feature a warning in both English and Spanish, advising individuals experiencing distress or depression to contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis hotline or text HOME to 741741. The sign must be at least eight and one-half inches (8.5) high by eleven inches (11) wide, feature black text against a white background, and use letters that are in at least thirty-six (36) point font. The signs shall not contain any other text.
Additionally, the bill stipulates that shooting ranges operating on a membership basis must require any person who is not a member to be accompanied at all times by a member or staff member of the range while on the premises and while engaging in shooting activity. This legislation aims to promote mental health awareness and provide resources for individuals in crisis within the context of shooting ranges. The act will take effect immediately upon passage.
