The bill amends Section 8-8-2 of the General Laws in Chapter 8-8, which pertains to the organization of the District Court. It moves the town of North Kingstown from the third division to the fourth division to better balance case workloads among the divisions. The third division will now consist of the city of Warwick, the city of Cranston, and several towns, while the fourth division will include the towns of Charlestown, Exeter, Hopkinton, Narragansett, New Shoreham, Richmond, South Kingstown, and Westerly, along with the newly added North Kingstown.
The bill also removes North Kingstown from the list of towns in the third division, which previously included North Providence, North Smithfield, and others. Additionally, it specifies that appeals and transfers in cases arising in the newly defined divisions will be transmitted to the appropriate county Superior Court clerks. The act is set to take effect two months after its passage.
