The bill amends Section 39-18-2 of the General Laws concerning the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) by modifying the composition and appointment process of its board members. The number of board members is increased from nine to ten, with the governor appointing nine members, including at least one regular user of fixed-route RIPTA transportation and one person with a disability. Additionally, the bill introduces the Rhode Island Climate Community as a group from which the governor should consider recommendations for board nominations.
Other changes include the election of a chairperson from among the authority's members rather than having the director of the department of transportation serve in that role. The quorum requirement is adjusted from five to six members. The bill stipulates that it will take effect on July 1, 2026.
