The bill amends Section 12-29-5 of the Domestic Violence Prevention Act to enhance penalties for individuals convicted of domestic violence offenses. It specifies that for a second violation, including both prior felony and misdemeanor convictions, the individual will face imprisonment for a term of not less than ten days and not more than one year. For a third and subsequent violation, also considering prior felony and misdemeanor convictions, the individual will be deemed guilty of a felony and face imprisonment for a term of not less than one year.
The bill does not include provisions regarding mandatory attendance in a batterers intervention program, nor does it address firearm possession or forfeiture related to domestic violence offenses. The act is set to take effect upon passage.
