The bill seeks to repeal Sections 16-22-30, 16-22-31, 16-22-32, and 16-22-33 of the Rhode Island General Laws, which currently govern the establishment of statewide academic standards in subjects such as mathematics, English language arts, science and technology, history, social studies, world languages, and the arts. In their place, new sections are introduced that establish updated statewide academic standards and curriculum frameworks aimed at enhancing educational quality.
The new provisions focus on inclusivity, cultural responsiveness, and the use of high-quality educational materials, ensuring that the curriculum meets the diverse needs of students. The council on elementary and secondary education and the commissioner of elementary and secondary education are tasked with developing and implementing these new standards.
Additionally, the bill outlines a framework for Local Education Agency (LEA) assistance partners, who are responsible for providing support to LEAs regarding the implementation of the curriculum and materials. These partners will engage with educators, tour schools, and report on curriculum implementation every three months. The bill emphasizes the importance of professional development and accountability in supporting educators to effectively implement the new curriculum standards. This act would take effect upon passage.
