The bill amends several sections of the General Laws in Chapter 11-47, which pertains to weapons, to include new definitions and regulations regarding stun guns. It introduces the definition of a "stun gun" as a battery-powered handheld device that transmits an electric charge to a person. The bill specifies that individuals must possess a license or permit to carry a pistol or stun gun.

It establishes that individuals aged eighteen (18) and over may purchase or possess a stun gun, while it criminalizes the sale or transfer of a stun gun to anyone under eighteen (18). Violations of this provision can result in felony charges, with penalties including imprisonment for not less than one year nor more than five years.

Additionally, the bill prohibits the use of a stun gun in the commission of a crime and against a police officer engaged in duty, with penalties for these violations also classified as felonies, including fines of up to ten thousand dollars ($10,000) and imprisonment for not more than ten (10) years. The act aims to enhance public safety by regulating the use and possession of stun guns and will take effect upon passage.
