The bill amends Section 31-41.2-3 of the General Laws regarding "Automated Traffic Violation Monitoring Systems" to extend the sunset date for the "Don't Block the Box" automated traffic detection systems from January 15, 2027, to January 15, 2030. This extension allows municipalities to continue using these systems to monitor violations of traffic control signals at designated intersections for an additional three years.

The bill also introduces new provisions that restrict the use of images or video captured by these monitoring systems solely for the enforcement of traffic violations, prohibiting their use for tracking individuals or vehicles for other purposes. It mandates that all recorded images or video must be destroyed or retained in accordance with existing regulations. Furthermore, it specifies that, absent a judicial warrant, any collected data—including images, recordings, metadata, and license plate information—cannot be sold, shared, or transferred to third parties, including other government agencies, except for the enforcement of traffic violations.

This act would take effect upon passage.
