The bill amends Section 11-32-2 of the General Laws in Chapter 11-32, titled "Obstructing Justice," to introduce new provisions regarding false reports of crime. It establishes that any person who knowingly makes or causes to be made a false statement about a crime that carries a sentence of imprisonment of not less than five (5) years nor more than twenty (20) years, with the intent that it be relied upon by a police officer or a member of the state police, shall be deemed guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, shall be imprisoned for not less than one (1) year nor more than five (5) years.
Additionally, the bill specifies that if the false statement pertains to a crime that carries a sentence of imprisonment of twenty (20) years or more, the offense will also be classified as a felony, resulting in a prison term of not less than five (5) years nor more than twenty (20) years. This act will take effect upon passage.
