The proposed bill, titled the "Restrictions on Self-Service Checkout Stations Act," aims to regulate the use of self-service checkout stations in grocery stores across the state. It establishes that grocery stores may not operate more than eight self-service checkout stations at any given time and mandates that for every two self-service checkout stations, there must be at least one manual checkout station in operation. Additionally, the bill restricts the number of self-service checkout stations that can be monitored by a single employee to two, ensuring that employees are relieved of all other duties while monitoring these stations.

The bill outlines the enforcement mechanisms, granting the Department of Labor and Training the authority to promulgate rules, regulations, and penalties for violations. It specifies that fines for multiple violations made by the same grocery store will be equal to the wages for one eight-hour shift based on the highest wage for hourly retail clerks for each day on which there is a violation. Employees are protected from retaliation for filing complaints regarding violations, and consumers are also given the right to file complaints, with retaliation against them being deemed unlawful. The act is set to take effect upon passage.
