The bill amends Section 11-32-2 of the General Laws in Chapter 11-32, titled "Obstructing Justice," to establish penalties for individuals who knowingly make false reports regarding crimes or official misconduct. The new language specifies that making a false statement—whether oral or written—about a crime or filing a formal complaint of misconduct against law enforcement personnel or emergency personnel will be classified as a misdemeanor. Offenders may be held accountable for any damages incurred by the falsely accused party as a result of the false report.

Additionally, the bill clarifies definitions related to law enforcement and emergency personnel, defining "law enforcement" to include permanently employed city or town police officers, state police officers, public safety officers, sheriffs, and capitol police officers, and defining "emergency personnel" to include emergency services officials, first aid personnel, emergency medical technicians, fire safety officials, and hospital staff. This legislation aims to deter individuals from making false accusations that could harm the reputations and careers of those in public service. The act will take effect immediately upon passage.
