The bill amends Section 16-22-32 of the General Laws in Chapter 16-22, which pertains to the curriculum in Rhode Island's education system. It establishes a process for local education agencies (LEAs) to petition the commissioner of elementary and secondary education to use a lower-cost curriculum program, provided that the program is substantially similar to those identified and approved by the commissioner. In order to petition for the lower-cost curriculum, the LEA must present evidence that the proposed alternative curriculum is of high quality and appropriate for its students. The act is set to take effect upon passage.
