The bill amends Chapter 39-18 of the General Laws concerning the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) by introducing a new section, 39-18-25, which focuses on creating parity with the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) regarding commuter passes. The bill enables RIPTA to consult with MBTA on the feasibility of allowing MBTA commuter rail passes to be used on all RIPTA buses. It establishes that both rail passes shall serve as dual passes for both RIPTA and MBTA. The consultation will also include proposed methods to apportion and share the costs of the passes between the two authorities. The bill is set to take effect upon passage.
