The bill establishes a new section in Chapter 23-28.2 of the General Laws titled "Electric and hybrid motor vehicle identification database." It mandates the Office of the State Fire Marshal to collaborate with the Division of Motor Vehicles to create and maintain a database specifically for electric and hybrid vehicles powered in whole or in part by high-voltage lithium-ion storage batteries. The Office is required to compile a contact list of all fire-fighting departments and districts, which will enable the Division to transfer essential vehicle information directly to the appropriate fire services.
The information to be collected and shared includes vehicle registration details, descriptions (make, model, year), and the address of the structure where the vehicle is located. The Division of Motor Vehicles is tasked with forwarding this information to the relevant municipal or volunteer fire department or fire district biannually, on January 1 and July 1. This act is set to take effect six months after its passage.
