The bill establishes a new section in Chapter 23-28.2 of the General Laws titled "Electric and hybrid motor vehicle identification database." This section requires the Office of the State Fire Marshal to collaborate with the Division of Motor Vehicles to create and maintain a database for electric and hybrid motor vehicles powered in whole or in part by high-voltage lithium-ion storage batteries. The Office is tasked with compiling a contact list of all fire departments and fire districts to facilitate the transfer of essential vehicle information, which includes the vehicle's make, model, year, and the address of the structure where the vehicle is located, to the appropriate fire protection services.
The Division of Motor Vehicles is required to forward this information to the relevant municipal or volunteer fire departments or fire districts biannually, specifically on January 1 and July 1 of each year. The act is intended to enhance fire safety by ensuring that fire departments are informed of the locations of these vehicles. The bill will take effect six months after its passage.
