The bill amends existing laws regarding campus police at public higher educational institutions in Rhode Island. It allows the board of education to appoint campus police officers who will have the authority to carry firearms, subject to specific training requirements. Campus police officers must complete a course of firearm instruction by October 1, 2026, and adhere to in-service training requirements.

Additionally, the bill includes campus police in the definition of "law enforcement officer," thereby granting them the same rights, duties, and responsibilities outlined in the "law enforcement officers' bill of rights." The board of education is tasked with adopting rules and regulations to implement the provisions of this chapter.

This act is set to take effect upon passage.
