The bill amends Chapter 16-21.7 of the General Laws, known as "The Nathan Bruno and Jason Flatt Act," by adding a new section that mandates middle and high schools under the jurisdiction of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (RIDE) to include specific crisis hotline information on student identification cards. On or before September 8, 2026, these ID cards must feature the telephone number for a state or national suicide prevention hotline and the telephone number for a state or national substance abuse crisis center. Schools have the option to provide a single contact number for an organization that offers both types of assistance, such as the 988 suicide and crisis lifeline.
Additionally, the bill requires that staff ID cards issued to teachers, administrators, professional staff, and custodial staff working within the school or school district also include or affix the same crisis hotline information. This information may be printed directly on the ID cards or contained on a sticker affixed to the ID cards. The act is set to take effect upon its passage.
