The bill amends Section 21-28.9-4 of the General Laws under "The Good Samaritan Overdose Prevention Act of 2016" to enhance legal protections for individuals seeking medical assistance during drug or alcohol-related emergencies. It introduces new legal language that clarifies that individuals who, in good faith, seek help for someone experiencing an overdose will not face charges related to the possession of controlled substances or drug paraphernalia, nor for operating a drug-involved premises, provided that the evidence for such charges was obtained as a result of seeking medical assistance. Additionally, the bill specifies that individuals who themselves experience an overdose and require medical help will also be immune from prosecution for similar offenses.

Furthermore, the bill expands the scope of immunity to include violations of bail, probation, and/or parole conditions that arise from the circumstances of the overdose. This change aims to encourage individuals to seek emergency assistance without fear of legal repercussions. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
