The Rhode Island House of Representatives has introduced a resolution recognizing May 27, 2025, as "ALS Awareness Day" in the state. This initiative aims to raise awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that severely impacts individuals' lives, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and respiratory failure. With no known cure and a life expectancy of only two to five years post-diagnosis, ALS affects thousands of people in the U.S. each year.
The resolution highlights the efforts of ALS United Rhode Island, the state's only nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting those affected by ALS through care services, advocacy, and research funding. In addition to recognizing ALS Awareness Day, the resolution commends ALS United RI for its commitment to improving the lives of individuals living with ALS and their caregivers. It encourages all Rhode Islanders to learn more about the disease, support those impacted, and participate in the Soak Challenge event on June 1, 2025, to raise funds for ALS United RI.
The resolution also directs the Secretary of State to transmit a certified copy to ALS United Rhode Island, reinforcing the state's commitment to advocacy and support for those affected by ALS.
