The Rhode Island House of Representatives has introduced a resolution to commemorate Lao New Year, known as Pi Mai Lao, which takes place annually from April 14 to April 16. This holiday marks the beginning of the Lao solar new year and is the most significant celebration in Lao culture, symbolizing renewal, purification, and hope for a prosperous future. Traditional customs during this festival include ceremonial water pouring to wash away misfortunes, Baci ceremonies, offering alms to monks, cleaning homes and temples, and engaging in water splashing celebrations.
The resolution highlights the importance of Pi Mai as a time for Laotian people worldwide to honor their history and cultural identity, particularly in light of the challenges faced by many Laotian families who fled their homeland during the Laotian Civil War. It also acknowledges the vibrant Laotian American community in Rhode Island, which has significantly contributed to the state's cultural landscape through various avenues such as civic life, education, and cuisine. The resolution recognizes the resilience of the Laotian people in preserving their language and customs despite the trauma of displacement.
Additionally, the resolution extends best wishes to the Lao community for a healthy, prosperous, and joyful Pi Mai, and directs the Secretary of State to transmit a certified copy of the resolution to Abbot Wern Sipasouck of Temple Wat Lao in Smithfield.
