The Rhode Island House of Representatives has introduced a resolution proclaiming May 2025 as "ALS Awareness Month" in the state. This initiative aims to raise public awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, which is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative condition affecting approximately 30,000 individuals in the U.S. at any given time. The resolution highlights the urgency of addressing ALS, noting that there are no cures available, and emphasizes the importance of access to new therapies, medical equipment, and communication technologies for those living with the disease.
The resolution also acknowledges the significant impact of ALS on military veterans, who are at a higher risk of developing the disease. It recognizes the efforts of the ALS Association, which has invested over $154 million in research to find a cure and improve the quality of life for those affected. The House encourages all citizens of Rhode Island to educate themselves about ALS and support initiatives aimed at combating the disease. A certified copy of the resolution will be sent to the Rhode Island Chapter of the ALS Foundation to further promote awareness and advocacy efforts.
Introduced by Representatives Solomon, Shekarchi, Blazejewski, and Chippendale on May 15, the resolution has been read and passed in the House.
