The resolution acknowledges the significant contributions of various ethnic communities in Rhode Island while highlighting the historical atrocities faced by the Greek population in Pontus, Smyrna, Asia Minor, and Eastern Thrace during the early 20th century. It details the systematic extermination of over 353,000 Pontian Greeks and more than a million Anatolian Greeks, alongside the Armenian Genocide, which collectively represent one of the first mass genocides of the 20th century. The resolution emphasizes the importance of remembering these events to ensure that such atrocities are not repeated and to honor the survivors and their descendants who have enriched the culture and society of Rhode Island.

In recognition of the 106th anniversary of the Greek Genocide in 2025, the resolution calls for a solemn commemoration on May 19th each year, joining the Greek-American community in remembrance. It also directs the Secretary of State to transmit certified copies of the resolution to the President of the Pan-Pontian Federation of the USA and Canada, reinforcing the commitment to remembering and learning from this tragic chapter in history.
