The bill amends Chapter 39-1 of the General Laws by adding a new section titled "39-1-2.2. Long-term contracts for natural gas." This new provision requires the public utility known as Rhode Island Energy to enter into at least one long-term contract for the procurement of natural gas pipeline capacity with an interstate pipeline operator, with a minimum duration of four years. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
